چکیده

Using autonomous underwater gliders, we quantified diurnal periodicity in dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and temperature in the subtropical North Pacific near the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) Station ALOHA during summer 2012. Oxygen optodes provided sufficient stability and precision to quantify diel cycles of average amplitude of 0.6μmolkg . A theoretical diel curve was fit to daily observations to infer an average mixed layer gross primary productivity (GPP) of 1.8mmol O2m 3 d . Cumulative net community production (NCP) over 110days was 500mmol O2m 2 for themixed layer, which averaged 57m in depth. Both GPPandNCP estimates indicated a significant period of below-average productivity at Station ALOHA in 2012, an observation confirmed by C productivity incubations and O2/Ar ratios. Given our success in an oligotrophic gyre where biological signals are small, our diel GPP approach holds promise for remote characterization of productivity across the spectrum of marine environments.

Net community production in the deep euphotic zone of the subtropical North Pacific gyre from glider surveys

Seagliders, deployed through most of 2005 in the subtropical North Pacific gyre, made measurements of temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen to quantify net community production (NCP) at Station A LongTerm Oligotrophic Habitat Assessment (ALOHA) of the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) using an oxygen mass balance approach. A ‘bowtie’-shaped pattern, 50 km by 50 km in size was repeatedly trav...

A Numerical Simulation of the Mean Water Pathways in the Subtropical and Tropical Pacific Ocean

A reduced-gravity, primitive-equation, upper-ocean general circulation model is used to study the mean water pathways in the North Pacific subtropical and tropical ocean. The model features an explicit physical representation of the surface mixed layer, realistic basin geometry, observed wind and heat flux forcing, and a horizontal grid-stretching technique and a vertical sigma coordinate to ob...

Methylmercury production below the mixed layer in the North Pacific Ocean

Mercury enters marine food webs in the form of microbially generated monomethylmercury. Microbial methylation of inorganic mercury, generating monomethylmercury, is widespread in low-oxygen coastal sediments. The degree to which microbes also methylate mercury in the open ocean has remained uncertain, however. Here, we present measurements of the stable isotopic composition of mercury in nine s...

The Ekman transfer of nutrients and maintenance of new production over the North Atlantic

The maintenance of new production requires a supply of nutrients to the euphotic zone to offset the loss through biological export. The dynamical supply of nutrients is usually discussed in terms of the vertical transfer from nutrient-rich, deep waters. However, the horizontal transfer is important in regions of downwelling over subtropical gyres, where nutrients may be transported across the i...

A Westward-Intensified Decadal Change in the North Pacific Thermocline and Gyre-Scale Circulation

From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s, the main thermocline of the subarctic gyre of the North Pacific Ocean shoaled with temperatures at 200–400-m depth cooling by 18–48C over the region. The gyre-scale structure of the shoaling is quasi-stationary and intensified in the western part of the basin north of 308N, suggesting concurrent changes in gyre-scale transport. A similar quasi-stationary c...
